Abstract

Mbaise Art School, also known as Mbari Art School, refers to artists of Mbaise origin whose works gained prominence after the Nigeria–Biafra Civil War in the 1970s. Their creative expressions extended beyond traditional art media, positioning them as transitional artists within Nigerian art history. Despite their popularity and international recognition, limited scholarly attention has been given to documenting their contributions. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the works and achievements of Mbari Art School artists and situating them within the broader context of Nigerian art history. Using a qualitative research approach, data were analyzed descriptively. The study reveals that the ideological foundations of the original Mbaise Art School are sustained in the works of contemporary artists such as Evariest Ibe, Bright Eke, and Hycent Nguma. These artists continue the legacy of the pioneers, now recognized as Neo-Mbaise artists.
