Abstract

This article examines the artistic legacy of Thomas Awaghoha Abirero, from Ozoro in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. It explores how his diverse body of work serves as inspiration for aspiring artists. Through detailed analysis of nine selected works in sculpture, graphics, textiles, ceramics, painting and sign writing, the study reveals Abirero's exceptional versatility and technical mastery across multiple artistic disciplines.
The research employs formal analysis and cultural interpretation to examine works which include "Hunter With His Catch", "Acrobatic Display", "Centre of Attention", "Burden and Grace", "Traditional Mask", "Chieftaincy Beads", "Traditional Hand Fan", "Sign Writing", and "Flower Vase". Each piece demonstrates Abirero's ability to blend indigenous Isoko cultural knowledge with contemporary artistic expression while maintaining aesthetic excellence and social relevance. The findings reveal that Abirero's work operates on multiple levels simultaneously, which are aesthetic, functional, spiritual and cultural, serving as both cultural documentation and philosophical statement. His journey from collaborative work with Chris-Michael Ogholie (1910–2008) through military service to establishing his own successful studio in Lagos exemplifies artistic resilience and entrepreneurial vision. The study identifies eight key dimensions through which Abirero's legacy inspires emerging artists. These are: versatility across media, cultural preservation with contemporary relevance, narrative power, entrepreneurial application, technical excellence, symbolic depth, collaborative values, and adaptive resilience. The study contributes to expanding art historical discourse beyond elite production to recognise vernacular artistic practices that document linguistic patterns, economic systems, aesthetic sensibilities and social values within Nigerian communities.
