Handcrafted Textile Designs: The Past, Present and the Future
Keywords:

This paper examines handcrafted textile design from historical, contemporary, and future perspectives. Handcrafted textile production involves manual processes supported by specialized skills acquired by artisans. These include embroidery, applique, tie-dye, batik, tapestry, weaving, mat-making, and printing. Historically, handcrafted textiles have been integral to cultures worldwide prior to modern industrialization. However, in contemporary Nigeria, their cultural significance and patronage have declined due to foreign influences. The study suggests that policy interventions, such as enforcing restrictions on textile imports, could revitalize local textile industries and encourage the production of high-quality handcrafted materials. The paper emphasizes the need to sustain traditional textile practices as both cultural heritage and economic opportunity.
