Abstract

Fashion in Nigeria has evolved significantly, incorporating both traditional and contemporary influences. This study explores the use of Neo-Akwete printed fabrics in modern clothing construction. Traditionally, Akwete woven fabrics are used as wrappers; however, this research examines their adaptation into contemporary garments such as skirts and dresses. The study addresses the limited use of printed Akwete fabrics in modern fashion and evaluates their potential for broader application. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining survey data, studio experimentation, and observational techniques. Findings indicate that Akwete printed fabrics are suitable for contemporary fashion and can enhance visibility for indigenous textile traditions. The study recommends increased utilization of these fabrics to promote cultural sustainability and innovation in fashion design.
